WHEREAS: the City of Terre Haute, Indiana has a significant interest in the continued vitality of general aviation, aircraft manufacturing, aviation educational institutions, aviation organizations and community airports; and
WHEREAS: general aviation and local airports have an immense economic impact on our community and Indiana is home to 115 public-use airports, which serve 9,684 pilots and 3,675 active general aviation aircraft; and
WHEREAS: Indiana is home to 72 fixed based operators, 58 repair stations, 650 heliports, 4 FAA-approved pilot schools, 1,724 flight students and 1,655 flight instructors; and
WHEREAS: general aviation in Indiana contributes $5.9 billion to the state’s economy annually, and improves overall quality of life by supporting emergency medical and healthcare services, law-enforcement, firefighting, disaster relief, and by transporting business travelers to their destinations quickly and safely; and
WHEREAS: the nation’s aviation infrastructure represents an important public benefit, and Congressional oversight should be in place to ensure stable funding of this system.
NOW, THEREFORE: I, Duke A Bennett, Mayor of the City of Terre Haute, do hereby proclaim the month of July, 2015 as
GENERAL AVIATION APPRECIATION MONTH
and recognize general aviation as a vital strategic resource to the city of Terra Haute.
