SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA
WHEREAS, General Aviation and Community Airports play a critical role in the lives of our citizens, as well as in the operation of our businesses and farms.
WHEREAS, the State of South Carolina has a significant interest in the continued vitality of General Aviation, Aerospace, Aircraft manufacturing, educational institutions and aviation organizations and community airports and airport operators.
WHEREAS, South Carolina manages and operates 60 publicly owned airports and four military airfields, which serve 10,096 pilots and 3,079 general aviation aircraft.
WHEREAS, General aviation airports in South Carolina are responsible for a direct, indirect, and induced total of 5,167 jobs.
WHEREAS, the total (direct, indirect, and induced) economic impact of all airports in the state is 65,533 jobs with a payroll of $1.9 billion. This number includes employment created by the state’s military airfields.
WHEREAS, General Aviation accounted for $1.6 billion in total impact, or $398 per capita. General aviation also generated $9.4 million in property taxes and $2.25 million in jet fuel taxes.
WHEREAS, General Aviation is integral to the State’s response to emergencies and natural disasters.
WHEREAS, South Carolina is home to 20 charter flight companies, 34 repair stations, 3 flight schools, and 49 fixed based operators providing 2,297 direct jobs to the South Carolina economy.
WHEREAS, the communities within South Carolina depend heavily on General Aviation and Community Airports for the continued flow of commerce, tourists and visitors to our State.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Junie L. White, by the power vested in me as Mayor of the City of Spartanburg, and on behalf of my fellow City Councilmembers, do hereby proclaim the week of August 17-23 as:
GENERAL AVIATION APPRECIATION WEEK
