CITY OF OCEAN SHORES, WASHINGTON
A PROCLAMATION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE OCEAN SHORES, WITH THE MAYOR CONCURRING, RECOGNIZING AND HONORING THE OCEAN SHORES MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, THE SIGNIFICANCE OF GENERAL AVIATION, AND COMMEMORATING THE BENEFITS THAT LOCAL AVIATION BRINGS TO COMMUNITIES AND DECLARING AUGUST 23, 2014 AS CITY OF OCEAN SHORES GENERAL AVIATION APPRECIATION DAY
WHEREAS, general aviation and community airports play a critical role in the lives of our citizens, as well as in the operation of our businesses, industry, ranches, and farms; and
WHEREAS, the state of Washington has a significant interest in the continued vitality of general aviation, aerospace, aircraft manufacturing, educational institutions, aviation organizations, community airports, and airport operators; and
WHEREAS, Washington State has 135 public use airports serving 20,028 pilots and 7,585 general aviation aircraft. Public use airports support 248,500 jobs, $15.3 billion in wages, and $50.9 billion in total economic activity.
WHEREAS, general aviation plays a vital role in the State’s response to emergencies and natural disasters. The Ocean Shores Municipal Airport role will be as a transfer point for medical and supplies for Grays Harbor County Emergency Management and the U.S. Department of Defense; and
WHEREAS, the City of Ocean Shores has operated the Ocean Shores Municipal Airport since we incorporated in 1970 and the current airport location having been developed in 1978; and
WHEREAS, the Ocean Shore Municipal Airport brings tourists and visitors to our City, serves and supports PAWS by transporting animals to needed areas, and serves as a transfer point for our Military transport helicopters.
NOW, THEREFORE, the Ocean Shores City Council, with the Mayor concurring, herby proclaim general aviation as a vital resource to the State of Washington and to the City of Ocean Shores and wish to declare August 23 of this year as General Aviation Appreciation Day.
