WHEREAS: the City of New Bedford in the State of Massachusetts has a significant interest in the continued vitality of general aviation, aircraft manufacturing, aviation educational institutions, aviation organizations and community airports;
WHEREAS: general aviation and the New Bedford Regional Airport have an immense economic impact in New Bedford, an increase of twenty-three percent within the last four years, and an additional sixty new jobs totaling to two hundred and ninety seven public and private jobs with an annual payroll of ten point six million dollars;
WHEREAS: according to the MassDOT Aeronautics Division, the state is home to thirty nine public-use general aviation airports. According to the FAA, these airports serve seven thousand nine hundred and sixty-eight pilots and two thousand six hundred and sixty-six active general aviation aircraft;
WHEREAS: according to the Massachusetts Statewide Airport Economic Impact Study, general aviation airports contribute more than sixteen point six billion to the Massachusetts Economy;
WHEREAS: additionally the same study found that general aviation airports in Massachusetts support one hundred and sixty two thousand, two hundred and fifty six and a total payroll of over six point one billion dollars;
WHEREAS: general aviation not only supports Massachusetts’ economy, it improves overall quality of life by supporting emergency medical and healthcare services, law enforcement, firefighting and disaster relief, and by transporting business travelers to their destinations quickly and safely;
WHEREAS: the nation’s aviation infrastructure represents an important public benefit, and Congressional oversight should be in place to ensure stable funding of this system.
NOW, THEREFORe, I, JON MITCHELL, Mayor of the City of New Bedford, do officially proclaim the month of February 2016 as “General Aviation Appreciation Month”
