WHEREAS, General aviation and community airports play a critical role in the lives of our citizens, as well as in the operation of our businesses and farms, and many communities in Texas depend heavily on General Aviation and Community Airports for the continued flow of commerce, tourists and visitors to our State; and
WHEREAS, The state of Texas has a significant interest in the continued vitality of General Aviation, aerospace, aircraft manufacturing, educational institutions and aviation organization and community airports and airport operators; and
WHEREAS, According to the FAA, there are 391 public-use airports in Texas, which serve 49,616 pilots and 18,500 active general aviation aircraft; and
WHEREAS, According to the Texas Department of Transportation, general aviation in Texas supports more than 56,000 jobs, supports $14.6 billion in economic activity annually, and plays a vital role in the State’s response to emergencies and natural disasters; and
WHEREAS, According to FAA data, Texas is home to 389 repair stations, 44 FAA-approved pilot schools, 9,896 student pilots and 8,435 flight instructors. According to Helicopter Association International, there are 1,954 heliports in Texas.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jerry F. Morales, Mayor of the City of Midland, do hereby proclaim the month of November 2015 as:
GENERAL AVIATION APPRECIATION MONTH
in Midland and call upon all citizens to remember the vital strategic resource and economic boom that General Aviation provides to the State of Texas and to our community.
