WHEREAS, Leesburg International Airport has been in operation since 1943 when it was commissioned as Leesburg Army Airfield, and now functions as a general aviation airport; and
WHEREAS, general aviation serves a critical role in the lives of our citizens and in the operation of our businesses and agriculture; and
WHEREAS, general aviation plays a vital role in the state’s response to emergencies and natural disasters; and
WHEREAS, the City of Leesburg has a significant interest in the continued vitality of aviation, aircraft and aerospace manufacturing, community airports and aviation education; and
WHEREAS, aviation contributes more than eight percent to Florida’s Gross Domestic Product and over seven percent of all the jobs in Florida are aviation related; and
WHEREAS, numerous leading aviation companies have a major presence in Florida; and
WHEREAS, organizations like the Florida Airports Council, Florida Aviation Business Aviation, Florida Aviation Aerospace Alliance, National Business Aviation Association, Aircraft Owner’s and Pilot’s Association, and National Air Transportation Association recognize and promote the interest and importance of aviation in Florida and throughout the world.
NOW, THEREFORE I, John Christian, Mayor of the City of Leesburg, do hereby proclaim April 2014 as Aviation Appreciation Month and encourage all citizens to learn about the important role aviation serves in our community.
