GENERAL AVIATION APPRECIATION MONTH
WHEREAS, the City of Hagerstown in the state of Maryland has a significant interest in the continued vitality of general aviation, aircraft manufacturing, aviation educational institutions, aviation organization and community airports; and,
WHEREAS, general aviation and the Hagerstown Regional Airport have an immense economic impact on Hagerstown and Washington County; and,
WHEREAS, a 2015 Maryland Economic Impact of Airports study found that general aviation airports in Maryland support more than $704 million in business-generated revenue; and,
WHEREAS, the State of Maryland has 35 public-use general aviation airports, serving 7,782 pilots and 2,774 active general aviation aircraft. General aviation airports support 6,317 jobs across the state; and,
WHEREAS, general aviation not only supports Maryland’s economy, it improves overall quality of life by supporting emergency medical healthcare services, law enforcement, firefighting and disaster relief, and by transporting business travelers to their destinations quickly and safely; and,
WHEREAS, the nation’s infrastructure represents an important public benefit, and Congressional oversight should be in place to ensure stable funding of this system.
Now, therefore, be it resolved that with the support of the City Council, I, David S. Gysberts, Mayor of the City of Hagerstown, Maryland, do hereby proclaim and recognize September, 2016, to be General Aviation Appreciation Month.
