GENERAL AVIATION APPRECIATION MONTH
WHEREAS, general aviation and our network of local airports, including Bartlesville Municipal Airport, play a vital role in the lives of our citizens, the operation of our businesses and farms, and locally as an economic engine for the City of Bartlesville and for companies that support thousands of jobs in the area; and
WHEREAS, the State of Oklahoma has a significant interest in the continued vitality of general aviation, aerospace, aircraft manufacturing, aviation educational institutions, aviation organizations and community airports; and
WHEREAS, Oklahoma has 137 public-use airports, including 110 publicly-owned airport, that serve approximately 7,900 pilots, more than 4,900 active general aviation aircraft, nearly 1,200 student pilots, as well as 129 repair stations, 1,264 flight instructors, 91 fixed-base operators, 86 heliports, and 50 locally based aircraft that utilize the Bartlesville Municipal Airport for business and private use, with ConocoPhillips providing ground servicing to general aviation including 660 jet fuel transactions totaling approximately 365,000 gallons of Phillips 66 jet fuel annually; and
WHEREAS, general aviation contributes an annual economic impact of $1.2 billion to Oklahoma’s economy, and the aviation and aerospace industry in the state accounts for nearly 144,000 jobs, and serves local companies such as Phillips 66, ConocoPhillips, Schlumberger, ChevronPhillips Chemical, Walmart, Dillards, Spears Manufacturing, Atwoods, Phoenix Rising, Elite Aviation, Ag Werx and others who utilize the airport to transact business locally, nationally and internationally; and
WHEREAS, aviation not only supports Oklahoma’s economy, it improves our overall quality of life by supporting emergency medical and health care services, assisting law enforcement, firefighting and disaster relief, and serves as an entry into the National Airspace System by utilizing the Bartlesville Municipal Airport to transport 28,000 passengers annually with 10 weekly round-trip flights to and from Houston, including ConocoPhillips, Phillips 66, and Corporate Angel Network passengers; and provides aircraft rescue firefighting (ARFF) capabilities to all general aviation aircraft; and
WHEREAS, the nation’s aviation infrastructure represents an important public benefit, and Congressional oversight should be in place to ensure stable funding of this system;
NOW THEREFORE, the Bartlesville City Council does hereby officially proclaim general aviation a vital strategic resource to the City of Bartlesville and declares June to be General Aviation Appreciation Month.
