General Aviation Month 2016
WHEREAS general aviation and community airports play a critical role in the lives of our citizens, as well as in the operation of our businesses, farms and community; and
WHEREAS according to the FAA, there are 70 public-use airports in the state, which serve 2,450 pilots and 1,188 active general aviation aircraft. Maine is home to 14 repair stations, 4 FAA-approved pilot schools, 399 flight students and 384 flight instructors; and
WHEREAS according to the Economic Impact of Airports in Maine study, general aviation airports support over 1,500 jobs and a payroll of $39.4 million annually, and more than 130,000 visitors to Maine arrive via general aviation aircraft each year; and
WHEREAS general aviation plays a vital role in the State’s response to emergencies, natural disasters, and rescue missions, and organizations like Patient Airlift Services (PALS) and air ambulances, in addition to police, warden, and mail services utilize general aviation to support daily operations connecting our rural communities; and
WHEREAS the City Auburn depends heavily on general aviation and community airports for the continued flow of commerce, tourists and visitors to our state;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Jonathan P. LaBonte, Mayor of Auburn, Maine do hereby proclaim General Aviation a vital strategic resource to the City of Auburn and declare November 2016 to be General Aviation Appreciation Month.
