MUNICIPALITY OF ANCHORAGE, ALAKSA
WHEREAS, general aviation and community airports play a critical role in the lives of our citizens, as well as in the operation of our businesses; and
WHEREAS, Anchorage has a significant interest in the continued vitality of general aviation, aerospace, aircraft manufacturing, educational institutions, aviation organizations, community airports and airport operators; and
WHEREAS, Anchorage has more private planes per capita than any similarly-sized city in the Lower 48, and on average Alaskans fly more than eight times as often as residents of other states; and
WHEREAS, general aviation plays a vital role in Anchorage and is used in response to emergencies and natural disasters throughout the State; and
WHEREAS, the aviation industry in Anchorage generates over $1 billion and over 15,000 jobs annually, accounting for 1 in 10 jobs in the Municipality; and
WHEREAS, many Alaska rural locations are unique in its almost total dependence on general aviation for connectivity to the Municipality of Anchorage and the services available here; and
WHEREAS, the Municipality of Anchorage is home of Lake Hood Seaplane Base, the world’s largest and busiest seaplane base, as well as Merrill Field, Anchorage’s first commercial airport.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ethan Berkowitz, Mayor of the Municipality of Anchorage, Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 2015, as
GENERAL AVIATION APPRECIATION MONTH
IN the Municipality of Anchorage and join all residents in recognizing General Aviation as a vital and strategic resource to our community and to all Alaska.
