    State of South Dakota

    Office of the Governor

    Whereas, General aviation and our public airports play a critical role in the lives of our citizens, as well as in the operation of our businesses and farms; and,

    Whereas, The state of South Dakota has a significant interest in the continued vitality of general aviation, aerospace, aircraft manufacturing, educational institutions, aviation organizations, public airports, and airport operators; and,

    Whereas, There are 70 public-use airports across the state, serving 2,262 certified pilots, and approximately 1,350 registered general aviation aircraft; and,

    Whereas, According to the 2010-2030 South Dakota State Aviation System Plan, the aviation industry as a whole supports over 7,000 jobs, $800 million in business sales, and provides more than $250 million in wages. With agriculture as the largest industry in the state, agricultural spraying supports more than 300 jobs, nearly $32 million in sales, and provides over $10 million in income; and,

    Whereas, General aviation contributes to the state’s economy and medical care, transports goods to the state’s Indian reservations, supports forest fire fighting, and boosts economic development for small communities; and,

    Whereas, General aviation is integral to the state’s response to emergencies and natural disasters, as well as a key component of business at South Dakota’s commercial airports; and,

    Whereas, The communities within South Dakota depend heavily on general aviation and community airports for the continued flow of commerce, tourism, and visitors to our state:

    Now, Therefore, I, Dennis Daugaard, Governor of the state of South Dakota, do hereby proclaim June 2014, as

    GENERAL AVIATION APPRECIATION MONTH

    in South Dakota.

    In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the state of South Dakota, in Pierre, the Capital City, this Nineteenth Day of May in the Year of Our Lord, two Thousand and Fourteen.
