    WHEREAS, General aviation and community airports play a vital role in the lives of our citizens, as well as in the operations of our businesses and farms; and

    WHEREAS, The State of Nebraska has a significant interest in the continued vitality of general aviation, aerospace, aircraft manufacturing, educational institutions, aviation organizations, community airports and airport operators; and

    WHEREAS, Many communities in Nebraska depend heavily on general aviation and community airports for the continued flow of commerce, tourists and visitors to our state; and

    WHEREAS, There are 81 public-use airports in Nebraska, serving 3,576 Nebraska pilots and 2,661 general aviation aircraft; and

    WHEREAS, Across the state, 5,250 Nebraskans are employed in air transportation, and it is estimated that tourism via general aviation supports 403 additional full-time jobs in Nebraska and $10.6 million in payroll; and

    WHEREAS, The Nebraska Department of Aeronautics estimates that state airports handle more than 970,000 general aviation aircraft operations a year; and

    WHEREAS, According to the Merge Global study commissioned by the General Aviation Manufactures Association and the National Association of State Aviation Officials, the annual economic impact of general aviation in Nebraska is $721 million; and

    WHEREAS, Many communities in Nebraska rely on general aviation and community airports for valuable services such as aerial firefighting, medical outreach, search-and-rescue, aerial agricultural spraying and wildlife management; and

    WHEREAS, Nebraska is home to 13 charter flight companies, 12 repair stations and two flight schools that hose 781 flight students and 478 flight instructors, over 72 fixed-based operators, 305 heliports and over 200 aerial applicators; and

    WHEREAS, The nation’s aviation infrastructure represents an important, public benefit and direct congressional oversight should be in place to ensure stable funding of this system; and

    WHEREAS, Organizations like the Nebraska Aviation Council, Nebraska Department of Aeronautics, Nebraska Association of Airport Officials, Nebraska Aviation Trades Association, Alliance for Aviation Across America, National Association of State Aviation Officials, National Business Aviation Association, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association and the National Air Transportation Association recognize the promote the interests and importance of general aviation in Nebraska and throughout the world.

    NOW, THEREFORE, I, Dave Heineman, Governor of the State of Nebraska, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM the month of May 2014 as
