    To the People of Kansas, Greetings:

    WHEREAS, the State of Kansas is enriched with great aviation history including aviation pioneers such as Dwane Wallace (Cessna), Walter and Olive Ann Beech, Lloyd Stearman, Al Mooney, William and Moya Lear, Amelia Earheart, and many more who broke barriers and aimed “to the stars with difficulties”; and

    WHEREAS, Kansas is home to numerous businesses, big and small, who serve a vital role in the aviation industry, is the second largest contributor to the Kansas economy, and contribute more aircraft to the world economy than anywhere else; and

    WHEREAS, general aviation and community airports are important to Kansas’  businesses-supporting commerce, attracting visitors and contributing more than 13.5 billion annually to the state’s economy, directly and indirectly; and

    WHEREAS, Kansas is home to approximately 140 public use airports who serve as the front door to their respective communities, provide emergency air ambulance access, and allow for economic development anywhere in the state; and

    WHEREAS, in September of 1911, Kansan Albin Kasper Longren marked the first flight of a Kansas-built airplane when he flew his pusher-type biplane Topeka I; and

    WHEREAS, many communities in Kansas depend heavily on General Aviation and community airport for the continued flow of commerce, tourist, and visitor to our State; and

    WHEREAS, the nation’s aviation infrastructure represents an important public benefit and Congressional oversight should be in place to ensure stable funding of this system:

    NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sam Brownback, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF KANSAS, do hereby recognize September, 2016, as

    Aviation Appreciation Month

    in Kansas and urge all citizens to join in this observation.
