    In the name and by the authority of the State of Iowa

    Proclamation

    Whereas, general aviation and community airports play a critical role for citizens, businesses, and travelers to our state; and

    Whereas, the state of Iowa has a significant interest in the continued vitality of general aviation, aerospace manufacturing, educational institutions, aviation organizations, community airports, and airport operators; and

    Whereas, general aviation activity in Iowa involves business aviation, air medical transport, air cargo, aerial application, law enforcement, search and rescue, specialty aerial services, air charter, personal aviation, and recreational opportunities; and

    Whereas, aviation in Iowa supports more than 47,000jobs and has an $18 billion economic impact in the state; and
    Whereas, Iowa boasts more than 5,600 pilots, 4,000 general aviation aircraft, and nearly one million annual aircraft operations; and

    Whereas, Iowa has 108 public-owned airports serving as the on-ramp to the national air transportation system and the front door to communities they serve; and

    Whereas, organizations like the Nebraska Aviation Council, Nebraska Department of Aeronautics, Nebraska Association of Airport officials, Nebraska Aviation Trades Association, the Alliance for Aviation Across America, National Business Aviation Association, National Association of State Aviation Officials, Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association and National Air Transportation Association, recognize and promote the interests and importance of aviation in Iowa and throughout the world; and

    Whereas, Organizations like the Iowa Public Airports Association, Iowa Aviation Promotion Group, Iowa Agricultural Aviation Association, Iowa 99’s, Iowa Professional Aviation Maintenance Association, Flying Farmers, and local pilot groups recognize and promote the interests and importance of aviation in Iowa; and

    Whereas, General Aviation plays a vital role in the State’s response to emergencies and natural disasters; and

    Whereas, airports and aerospace in Iowa accommodate military aircraft operations that support national defense, training exercise and emergency response; and

    Iowa is home to 69 fixed-based operators providing needed aviation services at airports, 24 charter flight companies, and 35 certified repair stations; and

    Whereas, the aviation industry offers a wide range of career opportunities and eight formal education programs in Iowa; and

    Whereas, youth education in aviation supports STEM initiatives involving math, science, and physics, and has provided tens of thousands of free airplane rides to Iowa children since 1992; and

    Many communities in Iowa depend heavily on general aviation and local airports for the continued flow of commerce, tourists and visitors to our State:

    Therefore, I, Terry E. Branstad, Governor of the State of Iowa, do hereby proclaim December, 2011 as

    General Aviation Appreciation Month
