STATE OF ALASKA
Governor Sean Parnell
WHEREAS, general aviation and community airports play a critical role in everyday life for Alaska’s people and economy. Citizens, businesses, industries, and government agencies are dependent on general aviation, often as a primary mode of transportation for travel to other communities, medical service, the shipment of goods, and tourism; and
WHEREAS, Alaska has more private planes per capita than any other state in the union and, on average, Alaskans fly more than eight times as often as residents of other states; and
WHEREAS, currently, there are 736 registered airports and seaplane bases, including 403 public use land-based airports, 43 heliports, and approximately 736 recorded landing areas in Alaska, housing 9,515 registered aircraft utilized by 8,066 active pilots; and
WHEREAS, the aviation industry generates $3.5 billion and over 47,000 Alaskan jobs annually, accounting for ten percent of jobs in the state; and
WHEREAS, Alaska has a significant and vested interest in the continued vitality of aviation, aircraft manufacturing, flight schools, community airports, aviation organizations, and tourism across our great state; and
WHEREAS, we appreciate the work of Alaska’s aviation stakeholders and other who continue to provide dedicated support to the preservation, growth, and safety of aviation in our state.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 2014 as:
General Aviation Appreciation Month
in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to celebrate general aviation as a unique resource in our state and to recognize the achievements of those who make aviation possible in the Last Frontier.
