    Executive Proclamation

    by

    Governor Sean Parnell

WHEREAS, general aviation and community airports play a critical role in everyday life for Alaska’s citizens, businesses, industries, and government agencies. Eighty-two percent of Alaska’s communities are roadless and rely on aviation to provide all-season access for commerce, transportation, emergency medical services, and tourism; and

WHEREAS, with more private pilots per capita than any other state, Alaska is home to 734 registered airports and seaplane bases, including 406 public use facilities and 328 private airports, which house 10,883 aircraft and are used by 8,514 registered pilots, In addition, numerous repair stations and fixed base operators serve the needs of Alaska’s pilots; and

WHEREAS, our state’s rugged terrain and climate call for utmost skill and resourcefulness. Vigilant monitoring of hazardous conditions, consistent training, and maintenance of reliable safety equipment are all indispensable practices for safe flying; and

WHEREAS, generating $3.5 billion and over 47,000 Alaska jobs annually, general aviation accounts for ten percent of the state’s jobs and has an overall economic impact of $400 million, or $571 per capita, ranking Alaska’s aviation industry among those of the top ten states most impacted economically by aviation; and

WHEREAS, general aviation plays a vital role in the State of Alaska’s response to emergencies and natural disasters. Alaska’s unique reliance on general aviation is manifested in the expertise and commitment of our pilots and in the numerous flight training programs dedicated to teaching the next generation of pilots.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 2012 as:
