  • Washington, DC – Today, the Alliance for Aviation Across America welcomed the confirmation of Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg. The U.S. Senate voted yesterday to confirm Secretary Buttigieg in an 86-13 vote.

Selena Shilad, Executive Director of the Alliance for Aviation Across America, said “We congratulate Pete Buttigieg on his confirmation as Secretary of Transportation, and look forward to working with him and Members of Congress on issues related to transportation and aviation around the country ranging from the importance of access to rural communities, to investments in sustainable fuel and technologies and the future of our aviation workforce.”

General aviation and small airports are an economic driver and lifeline to rural communities around the nation.  Not only are the majority of businesses that depend on general aviation small to mid-sized, but these aircraft and airports support more than 1.1 million American jobs and access to thousands of communities with no scheduled airline service. For these communities, these aircraft and airports are a literal lifeline, supporting emergency services fire-fighting, law enforcement, medical transportation, search and rescue, crop protection, powerline maintenance and pipeline inspection, and many other services.

General aviation is crucial now more than ever as operations have been down by 20% nationwide and up to 90% at some smaller airports around the country.  Many of these operators have been critical to transporting supplies, test kits and patients to and from communities in need.
Secretary Buttigieg is the youngest member of President Biden’s Cabinet. Buttigieg served as a Naval Intelligence Officer in the US Navy Reserve between 2009 and 2017. In 2014, he was deployed to Afghanistan. He also served as the Mayor of South Bend, Indiana for two terms from 2012 to 2020.  Buttigieg graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with first-class honors from the University of Oxford where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar.

Formed in 2007, the Alliance for Aviation Across America is a non-profit coalition of over 7,000 individuals, businesses, agricultural groups, FBO’s, airports, elected officials, charitable organizations, and leading business and aviation groups that support the interests of the general aviation community across various public policy issues.
