  • ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – The Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional airport hosted a Women Can Fly event today. Women aged eight and older got to go on complimentary flights. The event was held so women could learn about general aviation and the opportunities they have to learn to fly.

An 80-year-old former pilot even had the chance to take flight. She hasn’t flown since the 1970s.

“My grandson insisted when you get to be 80-years-old, you can go just any time and so this could be my last flight because I just turned 80, but you know, I might fool him,” Judith Vaughn, the 80-year-old former pilot, said.

“There’s definitely movements like this to try and get people exposed to know that this is a career option, this is something that you can do,” Cindy Ferek, a Flight Instructor with Blue Ridge Aviation, said.

Vaughn said she enjoyed the new experience of flying over tall mountains like the ones in our region.
