University of Iowa AirCare Celebrates 40 Years of Service

  • IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Monday marks 40 years of service for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics medical air service known as AirCare.

    On April 1, 1979, AirCare transported its first patient, according to a post on AirCare’s Facebook page.

    AirCare recently added a fixed-wing plane to transport patients who have serious injuries. It’s stationed at the Iowa City Municipal Airport.

    AirCare also has apparatus in Waterloo and Dubuque.

    According to the Facebook post, AirCare became the 11th helicopter in the U.S. to provide care.

    This summer, AirCare will have an open house at the Iowa City hangar. Those dates and times have not yet been finalized.
