  • DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) – If you have a child aged 8-17 in Danville, you’ll want to bring them to the airport on June 22.

This is the first time in ten years that the airport is participating in Young Eagles Day, an opportunity for students to fly in a plane for free and lean about different career opportunities in aviation.

“We’ll probably have at least 10-15 airplanes flying at one time on an hourly basis and we have secured an aviation promotion grant for it from the Virginia Department of Aviation and city council is in the process of appropriating the funds,” said Marc Adelman, Director of Transportation for Danville.

Students will also get to tour the airport, including the new public viewing area.

This is all made possible through the Experimental Aircraft Association. Danville Regional Airport is working with a chapter in NC.

One of the pilots working on this project also does this event in China. The goal of the group is to complete 100,000 free airplane rides throughout the year.

Adelman says he is hopeful for at least 200 rides on the 22nd.
