  • Officials broke ground Friday, Sept. 29, on the second phase of a $1.6 million apron expansion project at Huntington Municipal Airport, which will literally pave the way for larger aircraft to use the airport.

Work began on Monday, Oct. 2, and the apron is expected to be useable by aircraft by the end of this year and fully completed in spring of 2018. E&B Paving is the contractor for the project.

Phase I, which cost $700,000, has already been completed. Once Phase II, which will cost just shy of $1 million, is completed, the airport will be able to accommodate the maneuvering of larger-sized aircraft.

Ninety percent of the funding on the project came from the Federal Aviation Administration. Another 5 percent was provided through the Indiana Department of Transportation and the remaining 5 percent from the airport itself and user fees collected.
