  • Floyd County’s airport is only the second in the nation to be recognized as a Purple Heart Airport.

The Floyd County Commission approved the proclamation for the Richard B. Russell Regional Airport, Admiral J. H. Towers Field last week. Several Purple Heart recipients attended and County Commission Chairman Larry Maxey is a Purple Heart recipient.

“Just to see a smile on the guy’s faces that we think enough of them to do this is well worth it because they have done so much for us,” said Chip Hood, who served as chairman of the Floyd County Airport Authority.

Valdosta has the only other airport in the nation that is a Purple Heart Airport. Signs will be placed on the outside perimeter of the airport and at the entrance road.
