  • A $2.1 million grant has been awarded to the Yuma International Airport (YIA) to fund a variety of projects.

The money comes from the Arizona Department of Transportation Multimodal Planning Division Aeronautics Group. The most notable project will be the rehabilitation of an existing asphalt apron in the back of the air field. That project is being done by DPE Construction, Inc.

Gen Grosse, corporate account manager at YIA, says the original asphalt on the construction site dates back to the 1960s.

The concrete and asphalt has crumbled over the years, now posing as a potential hazard for air crafts at YIA.

“This allows us the opportunity to give it a new face lift. The public doesn’t see it because it’s on the air field, behind our hangars. However, it’s an important area for larger aircraft to be able to park on,” said Grosse.

Construction will start in February with diligent communications between MCAS Base Operations, Air Traffic Control and airfield users. Airport staff will post the project’s phasing and progress on the airport’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/flyyuma.
