  • The Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport is a layover for Santa this year.

Santa will be heading in from Charlotte at noon on Saturday to drop off some toys at the Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport’s Toys for Tots donation box. The public is invited, airport supervisor Jack Poole said.

“It is open to the public to see the aircraft come in,” Poole said.

The Shelby airport is just one of several in the region participating in the event based out of Mooresville. It is in conjunction with a mass Toys for Tots fly-out with Charlotte Experimental Aircraft Association 309 Chapter.

This is the first year that the local airport has participated in this event and the public is asked to bring toys to donate to the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.

“Anyone can bring a toy to participate in the local Toys for Tots toy drive,” Poole said.

Members of the Charlotte chapter will be flying out from the Lake Norman Airpark in Mooresville to deposit toys that have been collected to different airports in the region.

The fly-in is dependent on weather, Poole said. If there is inclement weather, it will be rescheduled for Sunday at noon.
