  • On Saturday (Nov. 7) Hot Springs County officially opened its new airport. This airport, which is located near the intersection of Wyoming Highways 120 and 170, replaces the old Hot Springs County Airport which was located next to the golf course in Thermopolis near Roundtop Mountain.

Several presenters spoke at the event including Governor Matthew Mead, former Governor Dave Freudenthal, U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Hot Springs County Commissioner Chairman Brad Basses, and Jesse Lyman who’s a civil engineer with the Federal Aeronautics Administration.

Several different entities were involved in the construction of the new airport and Mead says the coordination of everyone involved was remarkable, “When you have multiple sources of money and multiple people who are in the planning process sometimes it doesn’t work as well this did but in a short period of time they got this done.”

The Governor’s jet was the first jet to ever land at the new airport, and Mead says the view was amazing, “When you look down you see that beautiful new runway smooth as silk its like butter, and then the backdrop I mean this beautiful mountain scenery with the snowcapped peaks it’s certainly beautiful.”

Construction on the new airport began in 2012.
