  • If you’re looking for a new job, GE Aviation says it’s hiring.

That news comes from Ashe County Economic Developer Kathy Barr who told county commissioners and West Jefferson Town Manager Brantley Price last week the company will kick off a new hiring push this month.

The company plans to hire 60 more employees for 2016, and will begin taking online applications Nov. 16.

“That really tells us a lot about the caliber of people we have in Ashe County and the kind of workforce we have,” Commissioner William Sands said. “I hope that encourages other institutes and businesses to come to our county. We have a lot to offer.”

GE, a global leader in jet engine and aircraft system production, hosted a grand opening ceremony in July for its 80,000-square foot expansion at its West Jefferson facility. The company said it only expected to hire 18 employees in 2015, but has already hired more than three times that many at 59.

Counting the additional 60 employees the company said it plans to hire next year and GE will exceed the 105 new jobs the company originally promised to hire throughout 2015-2016.
