  • The Government Finance Officers Association awarded a 10th consecutive Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the City of Naples Airport Authority. The award is the highest recognition in government accounting and financial reporting.

Director of Finance and Administration Sheila Etelamaki has been responsible for the Airport Authority’s comprehensive annual financial reports since 2011.

The GFOA established the award program in 1945 to encourage state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements and prepare comprehensive annual financial reports that demonstrate a constructive spirit of transparency and full disclosure, clearly communicate their financial stories and motivate potential users to read the reports.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada serves more than 17,000 government financial professionals. The association was founded in 1906 and works to enhance and promote the professional management of governments by identifying and developing financial policies and best practices and promoting their use through education, training, member networking and leadership.

Naples Municipal Airport, a certificated air-carrier airport, is home to flight schools, air charter operators, car rental agencies and corporate aviation and nonaviation businesses as well as fire/rescue services, mosquito control, the Collier County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit and other community services.

During the 2014-15 fiscal year, the airport accommodated 99,569 takeoffs and landings, and the operating and capital budget was more than $26 million.

All funds used for the airport’s operation, maintenance and improvements are generated from activities at the airport or from federal and state grants; the airport receives no property tax dollars. The Florida Department of Transportation values the airport’s economic impact to the community at $283.5 million annually.

Naples Municipal Airport operates as a general aviation airport but complies with the same Federal Aviation Administration standards and safety guidelines as airports with commercial airline service, maintaining the same level of security and adhering to all Transportation Security Administration and FAA directives. During a recent annual inspection, the FAA found the airport 100 percent in compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations Part 139 requirements.
