  • Two people were hoisted to safety Wednesday, Aug. 26, near Cucamonga Peak in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Vinh Houng, 20, and Thao Nguyen, 22, were hiking up the peak from the Mt. Baldy Village area about 4:01 p.m. Wednesday when they “became disoriented” and veered off the main trail, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department news release.

Houng and Nguyen became exhausted and had little water, the news release said. That’s when they used a cellphone to call for assistance.

A Sheriff’s Department patrol helicopter responded to the call, and deputies located Houng and Nguyen in steep terrain surrounded by trees. Since the steep terrain prevented the helicopter from landing, the crew decided that a hoist rescue was necessary.

The crew hoisted Nguyen and Houng into the helicopter, and flew them to a nearby landing site.
