  • JACKSON, MISS. — Airports in Gulfport, Oxford, and Lumberton are sharing in nearly $5.6 million in grants from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The grants were announced Thursday by U.S. Sens. Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, both R-Miss.

The University-Oxford Airport, owned by the University of Mississippi, received $4.2 million for construction of an apron — the area of an airport where the aircrafts are parked, unloaded or loaded, refueled or boarded.

The Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport received $1.2 million to restore the airport’s apron, taxiway, and terminal building, in addition to widening the taxiway.

The city of Lumberton has received a $155,000 for the I.H. Base Jr. Memorial Airport. The money will fund the construction of a 7,500-square-foot hangar building.
