  • JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -Growth in general aviation at the Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport has prompted administrators there to build a new home for a few extra private planes. Work is being done on the facility’s 15th hangar.

It’ll be able to house a variety of aircraft.

A $250,000 grant from the Mississippi Dept. of Transportation is paying for most of it and the rest is coming from a loan from the Mississippi Development Authority.

Airport executive director Tom Heanue said the extra hangar space is needed.

“When I started as director here, we had about 34 based aircraft,” Heanue said. “We’re at about 75 now, and now, we actually need room for some more. We’re getting a little tight here, so this hangar is well overdue,” he said.

The hangar should be finished by mid-April. It’s the 7th in the last 12 years that’s been built at the facility.
