  • A mountain biker in Crystal Cove State Park required helicopter rescue Saturday morning after experiencing chest pains and difficulty breathing, fire officials said.

Ground vehicles couldn’t make it to the location of the man, who was in his early 50s, said Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Steve Concialdi. So at about 11:15 a.m., Newport Beach Fire Department and OCFA paramedics flew in on the OCFA helicopter, treated the man and flew him to Mission Hospital in Mission Veijo.

The man was in “moderate” condition, Concialdi said.

“Our helicopter is invaluable. It can get to any scene in Orange County within minutes,” Concialdi said.

It wasn’t the only rescue Saturday.

Earlier Saturday, an adult woman suffered an ankle injury while in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park. OCFA ground units were able to reach her and return her to her car around 10 a.m.

“One of the people with her took her to the hospital,” Concialdi said.
