  • La Porte Mayor Blair Milo hands Ed Volk, the president of the La Porte Municipal Airport Authority, her proclamation declaring June General Aviation Month in La Porte.

Volk noted that general aviation airports like La Porte’s were often a lost cousin among airports because they didn’t have the attention-grabbing jets or military aircraft. But they were important for people conducting business and needing to travel between locations in a hurry.

It was also noted that the airport’s first Aviation Enrichment Camp, an offering held in conjunction with the Kalamazoo AirZoo, has been booked solid this summer, so next year organizers are expecting to expand it beyond the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. The camp has an aviation and space program focus, and involves students shooting off rockets, riding in airplanes and receiving ground school education.
