Federal Money Coming to Fix Airport Lights

  • The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport is getting money to upgrade its lighting system.

Senator Bob Casey says he was able to get funding from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Airport officials say the current lighting system that helps planes land stopped working in February 2012. That has made it more difficult for incoming flights, especially during storms.

“If they have enough fuel on board and enough time, they’ll wait and hope for an improvement in the weather, and that’s very unpredictable. If that doesn’t occur, they have to go to an alternate airport,” explained air traffic control manager Mike Dennis.

It is not clear if the FAA will repair the current lighting system at the airport in Luzerne County or replace it.
