The grant, from the Federal Aviation Administration, will go toward constructing a new taxiway that is parallel to the runway. The new taxiway will allow aircraft to prepare for takeoff away from the runway, which they are not currently able to do, according to a press release from Rep. Annie Kuster announcing the grant yesterday.
“This is going to add a measure of safety to our operations,” Airport Manager David Rolla said in the press release. “Making the runway safer is something that’s always a priority.”
The first phase of construction on the taxiway will begin this fall, Associate Engineer Martha Drukker wrote in a June report to the mayor and city council. The second phase is scheduled for fiscal year 2015.
“Concord Municipal Airport, like all of our local airports, is an essential part of New Hampshire’s transportation network and a key contributor to the local economy,” Kuster said in the press release. “It’s critical that we make these improvements to keep our travelers safe and our businesses growing, and to strengthen the New Hampshire economy.”
