  • SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Officials say a $1.4 million grant for the airport in Peoria will be used to fix the airfield’s apron and improve access to a major employer in the area.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Cheri Bustos  — both Illinois Democrats — say the money is from a competitive grant program by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Bustos says improvements to the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport will “help our area transport passengers and goods in a safer manner” while putting people to work.

The Airport Improvement Program grant is funded by the Airport and Airways Trust Fund. Revenue in the fund comes from ticket taxes, user fees and aviation fuel taxes.

The FAA determines which airport projects are the highest priority.
