  • ROME, N.Y. — Griffiss International Airport in Rome is getting $5.5 million in federal money for runway and hangar improvements.

The grant comes through the Airport Improvement Program of the Federal Aviation Administration. The funds were announced Thursday by the office of U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna of Barneveld.

Hanna is a pilot and member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He said the funding will make necessary upgrades at Griffiss to maintain safety and efficiency.

Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente said the money will be used to rebuild the taxiway and two hangars. Picente called it a key component for the long-term economic development plan of the former Air Force base, which was closed in the 1990s.
