  • Surf Air, the membership-only airline based in Santa Monica, made its first flight Wednesday from Burbank to the Bay Area.

The airline offers members unlimited flights up and down the California coast for a monthly fee of $1,650.

The airline, which flies small eight-passenger aircraft, is expected to fly four round trip flights per day between Burbank and San Marcos, which is about 24 miles south of San Francisco.
“We are thrilled to be able to provide frequent California travelers this groundbreaking alternative for air travel,” said co-founder and chief executive Wade Eyerly.

The airline received an operating certificate earlier this month from the Federal Aviation Administration, plus key funding from Velos Partners and Base Ventures.

Other investors include Anthem Venture Partners, NEA, actor Jared Leto, Mike Walsh, TriplePoint Capital, Siemer Ventures, Baroda Ventures, Gilad and Eytan Elbaz, real estate executive Rick Caruso, and entrepreneur Jeffrey Stibel.
