  • A grand opening will be held Monday for a new terminal building at Fort Wayne’s Smith Field Airport.

Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority officials said the new terminal was created through a roughly $500,000 renovation of a former Ivy Tech Community College building.

Officials said the new terminal at the general-aviation airport features a convenient customer service counter, a multipurpose room for meetings and training seminars, new office space, 24-hour restrooms, a patio area and a new fuel farm for aircraft.

The old terminal is still at the Ludwig Road airport, officials said, and is being used for events.
“The old terminal building was 35 years old and lacked the space needed to sufficiently serve our customers and business partners,” Scott Hinderman, executive director of airports for the authority, said in a statement. “Now, we have plenty of space for our staff and pilots and also room to grow, which is exactly what we see general aviation doing in Fort Wayne.”
