The Newport Municipal Airport has received a $6.3 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to rebuild a runway.

The runway that will be reconstructed was last repaved in 1983. Construction will begin in June 2013 with a completion date set for October 2013.

Congressman Kurt Schrader said improving the runway will create jobs in the area and generate opportunities for economic growth.

“General aviation airports such as Newport are critical to America’s aviation infrastructure,” said acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. “This project will improve Newport’s pavement surface conditions, drainage and safety.”

The FAA Airport Improvement Program provides $3.35 billion in annual funding for projects in the U.S.
