Two House members from Kansas want the federal government to investigate whether the domestic jet industry faces unfair global competition.
At the request of Republicans Reps. Mike Pompeo and Lynn Jenkins, the chairman of the influential House Ways and Means Committee has asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to look into their concerns.
Republican Rep. Dave Kamp of Michigan, who heads the panel, asked the agency to report back to Congress in within 11 months.
Wichita is home to several aviation companies, including Cessna, Hawker Beechcraft and Bombardier Aerospace, as well related industries. Pompeo, who represents the region, and Jenkins said they want to know if foreign governments are unfairly aiding their own aviation industries, tilting the playing field in their favor.
“With half of all U.S.-built general aviation aircraft heading overseas, and the export market continuing to grow, it is more important than ever to ensure that no nation is illegally subsidizing their own general aviation industry,” Pompeo said.
“We must ensure their competitive edge is not being unfairly diminished,” Jenkins said.
