LETTERS: Low-Flying Big 3's Request

  • Benefits of planes

While the decision by the CEOs of the Big 3 automakers to fly their company planes to congressional hearings last month was ill-advised, their actions should not tarnish the positive impact small aircraft have on small businesses.

The truth is the vast majority of businesses that use small planes are small to mid-sized businesses; the same companies that are the back-bone of America’s economy. These are not the CEOs of automakers, but the farmers, manufacturers, medical companies and ranchers that provide residents of rural Texas communities with the goods and services they need for their everyday lives.

Using the small airports like the ones located in west Houston, Brenham, Bay City and Liberty, businesses can reach customers in a fraction of the time it would take by ground transportation, especially into areas that the commercial airlines blatantly ignore.

Because of their great impact, it is disappointing that poor decisions by one company can cast such a valuable small business tool in poor light.
