  • Mayors and others have pleaded to President Barack Obama to recognize the importance of general aviation to small towns and local economies across the country.

Nearly 70 mayors have signed a letter to the president.

Among them is Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer. He has invited President Obama to come to Wichita to see firsthand the toll the economic downturn has taken in this aircraft manufacturing city.

Aviation supporters say more than 5,000 communities with little or no commercial air service depend on general aviation.

The Alliance for Aviation Across America is spearheading the effort.
