Profile of a Business
DAVIS AVIATION
Name: Davis Aviation
Owners: Carl & Paula Davis
Location: Jackson, MS
March 2007 marked a momentous milestone for Davis Aviation. Carl Davis and his wife, Paula, have been selling and distributing parts for aircraft for five years.
Since opening with only two employees in March 2002, Davis Aviation has become a robust small business. “It has been a struggle, I’m a salesman, I didn’t know much about operating a business when I started, but I am enjoying every minute of it,” says Carl.
Though he claims to not know about operating a business, this one has become greatly successful. Now with seven employees, Davis Aviation has continued plans for growth. Currently, steps are being taken to become a certificated 14 CFR part 145 repair station, which will allow Davis Aviation to perform aircraft maintenance and component repairs.
Davis Aviation is one of the many small businesses that will be hurt by the FAA’s user fee funding proposal. “While the big commercial airlines would net another tax break, small businesses like mine across Mississippi would be decimated by this proposal. This wouldn’t just affect the livelihood of my business, it would affect the small towns and communities that our customers’ planes serve across Mississippi.”
The general aviation community comprises a large part of Davis Aviation’s customer base, and it is a growing market. “Right now the future is very bright for Davis Aviation.” However that future will be dimmed considerably, and possibly extinguished by the FAA’s current proposal.
Before opening the business Carl worked with Raytheon Aerospace as parts sales representative. “I saw a niche opportunity for service in the industry, and the rest is history. I’m living the American dream. I’ve built a successful business from the ground up.
